Foley or indwelling catheters are used to drain urine from the bladder and designed to remain in place for up to 30 days. They are held in place with a small balloon that is inflated with sterile water. Foleys are connected to a short length of tubing which is connected to a drainage collection bag (referred to as a bedside bag). They are available in latex, silicone-coated, pure silicone, and lubricant-coated catheters with 5-10cc or 30cc balloons. Usually, foley catheters are inserted by a healthcare professional like your doctor or nurse.
